Slow Sauerbraten

by hfdsjkconorhfdjs on 03/01/2008 02:07, 59 messages, last message: 06/11/2008 18:06, 26577 views, last view: 05/02/2024 08:15

For some reason, sauerbraten runs really slow.

I run on these settings:

720x480x32

0XAA

Shaderdetail 3

grass 1

waterrefract 1

waterrflect 1

shadowmap 1

shadowmapsize 7

I get very low fps whenever I play.

Vsync is off, maxfps is 500.

Now, you may say I need a new CPU/GPU/more ram, but here are my specs...

MacBook Pro
nVidia GeForce 8600M (128MB) maybe 256MB
2GB ram
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
Mac OS X 'Tiger' 10.4.11

I have the latest System Software, and sauerbraten is up to date. I also made sure that it wasn't using rosetta to emulate PowerPC.

Cheers,
Conorkirk

It was about the same with both.

If its a driver issue related to that particular model on macbook then there is not a lot we can do without having direct access to one to do extensive testing on. If you what to work it out yourself then between using Shark and OpenGL Profiler (or Instruments) then you should be able to pinpoint where it gets stuck... Have a bit of a play then come find me on sauerbraten IRC, and if we make progress then together, then with the help of eihrul we may find a workaround... good luck!

I am not much of a coder but I know my way around the command line and some of Instruments and a few other things. I am also willing to blindly execute code from you or Eihrul, so it is *almost* like you having one :D

i can confirm severe problems with nvidia hardware on sauerbraten in macosx. the Geforce 8800 GT performs a *few* times slower than the ATI Radeon 1900XT in sauerbraten, although it is about twice as fast in other games.

Suspicion based on rumour...in rendergl.cpp force hasFBO to false

changing hasFBO doesn't help, but weirdly disabling hasVBO doubles the performance on the default map.

that is still about one fifth of the win32 performance.

the picture may be different on larger maps.

disabling any of the settings that are now in the gui (in CVS) or changing to fixed function rendering also doesn't give more than a few percent. *GRRR*

Previously someone was saying that on a dual-boot machine that they were getting 200fps under Windows, but 5fps with OSX. The advice I've received is start submitting reports of this at http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/ - registration is free.

Meanwhile I can do a show/tell/WTF at the local pro dev group when we meet in a few weeks (if you're lucky that will be before the next release)

opening bugs with apple is useless unless you have a *paying* developer-account and spend your "Technical Support Incidents" on getting a bug fixed. i've bugs open there that aren't looked at for years. i already have a bug open for various opengl problems/crashes including complete test-cases which is being ignored for a few month now, so i doubt opening a bug with something vague like "sauerbraten is slow" will work any better.

still i've heard that bugs that are reported more often are looked at earlier, so if every mac nvidia user here files the same bug we might have a chance ;-)

Grrr... So a local colleague reports that "CVS version runs beautifully smoothly on the GeForce 8600M under 10.5.2 + graphics update 1"

Can I repeat the question: What version of OSX and graphics update are you using?

the same: 10.5.2 + graphics update

i wouldn't come here confirming the issue without having applied the latest updates ;->

perhaps the "Graphics driver performance fix" supposedly in 10.5.3 will fix things for sauerbraten ;-)

Can anybody suggest a good resolution to run at if I want shaders, soft shadows, and water stuff on?

You just have to experiment. A lot of it depends on the map you're playing, and how many players you're playing with... but as a whole, it's a kind of "add to taste" thing. I'm a high-res ho, so I tend to turn stuff off until I get a resolution that I'm happy with- it just takes some experimentation.

I typically like to keep itabove 30000x30000 with 99XAA, with shadowmapsize real and bloom on. The only problem is that sometimes my fps goes over 9000, causing speedups, but generally, if I maxfps 1000, it's good.

If you run sauer using the opengl profiler and set breakpoints on both errors and software rendering fallback, then does anything trigger?

%^@£

humour me - using the default settings, shaders etc, what fps do you get in metl4 vs what fps do you get in an empty /newmap ?

I've now had the latest CVS version of sauer tested on the grand total of 3 macbook pros with 8600M... all machines up to date, etc, etc... and all run at a reasonable fps.

The only suggestion I have to pass is on is: run shark and and send us the performance data.
