Slow Sauerbraten

by hfdsjkconorhfdjs on 03/01/2008 02:07, 59 messages, last message: 06/11/2008 18:06, 26575 views, last view: 05/01/2024 22:02

For some reason, sauerbraten runs really slow.

I run on these settings:

720x480x32

0XAA

Shaderdetail 3

grass 1

waterrefract 1

waterrflect 1

shadowmap 1

shadowmapsize 7

I get very low fps whenever I play.

Vsync is off, maxfps is 500.

Now, you may say I need a new CPU/GPU/more ram, but here are my specs...

MacBook Pro
nVidia GeForce 8600M (128MB) maybe 256MB
2GB ram
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
Mac OS X 'Tiger' 10.4.11

I have the latest System Software, and sauerbraten is up to date. I also made sure that it wasn't using rosetta to emulate PowerPC.

Cheers,
Conorkirk

Still pretty bad.

ATIRULE: Where will I get drivers from if I run OSX? nVidia doesn't provide OSX drivers :/ (Though, things would be better if they did :D )

I did some quick googleing and can't find and drivers

... I also see in another thread that you say it runs fine under bootcamp...

When sauer starts up what does it say in the console?
What are other opengl games like in osx?
Has sauer always been this way, if not, then when did it change?
That pistol model is different - so is a non-modded version of sauer ok?

Apparently we're not alone https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1757
- freezing up and pathetic fps...

Claims things improve once you're running OS X 10.5.2 w/Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 - if that's true then I'm surprised more mac users aren't screaming at us...

I have no idea...
"cube 1 is slow" - AFAIK the sourceforge binary download is only PPC.
Maybe try the hack the 2nd lifers are using to change the driver (see within earlier URL) - note apply it to sauerbraten not the launcher ;-)

#9: how peculiar...

cube 1 and cube 2 are SDL apps. Does this issue per chance exist with any other SDL based applications running on leopard/tiger. There's a few you can try out, like the nexuiz binary that doesn't use AGL. Or maybe battle for wesnoth. I'm not saying OSX is unable to run SDL applications properly, I'm just highlighting it as a possibility.

As already mentioned, Sauer runs fine on OS X Tiger/Leopard with a MacBook Pro and the Radeon X1600M. I heard that when those newer MBPs came out, the drivers for the GF 8600M were bad, but that should have been fixed with Software Updates...

#11: PPC/OGLProfiler

by sdhfjkconorhfjds on 03/03/2008 05:05

a baby rabbit: Yep, I thought so. I will try recompiling to see if it helps. (Cube 1)

About the OpenGL profiler: It didn't help much, but I dont think i did it right. After I add the sauerbraten.app to the list, and change the driver, can I just use the launcher? Or should I just run it from the list? If I run it from the list, it opens then quits. Here is how I did it:

from the list...
You will also need to set the PWD env variables in the bottom table (hmm - the gui is bit borked there it seems, but do your best)... e.g. I would run it with:

App: FullPath:
sauerbraten.app /Volumes/Play/sauerbraten/sauerbraten.app

Name: Value:
PWD /Volumes/Play/sauerbraten

#13: hmm

by hfdsjkconorhfdjs on 03/04/2008 02:09

If I set it to the ATI one (Or any of the drivers) I have nothing. No power of two textures, framebuffer object, shaders, cube maps, etc.

It even has no lighting. :/

Are there any other recent macbook pro owners who have sauer problems? Conor, maybe you can visit the store where you bought yours and test sauer on another machine.

#16: I know of one more

by jfhkdfsconorhfdjsk on 03/06/2008 00:57

My friend has the same MacBook Pro as me, (bought around the same time) and he has the same problem.

I am beginning to think this is with SDL.

Are there any SDL demos that I could try that would maybe be able to pinpoint the problem?

"...this is with SDL" - imho SDL should be fine.

Just open the application package of the games and see what frameworks they have embedded - it's pretty common, in that the first dozen games I tried I found:
Beyond the Red Line, Nexuiz, Quake4, Gish

Well actually Nexuiz has two versions, one which uses SDL, and one which doesn't.
