#3667: That works

by Joey on 11/22/2004 22:18

That actually worked :) Thanks for the help. Now I can start experimenting!

If the iso rpg idea <-> cube combination actually works out well enough for the project I have in mind for it (I work at a no budget independent game studio) then I'll be very very happy. The project currently has scrap syndrome, but it's an important project for us since we want to get into the game industry with it, and we hope to get this project I am talking about published one day (probably not any time soon, to not break the integrity of this post, but we've been working on it for two years now and all we have is a ton of 2d sprites, concept art, and one hell of a long, descriptive story board ;)). If I get anything interesting done I'll put some updates on the forum.

Disregard the following if you're not a programming with spare time.

[blatant advertising]
Also, we're still looking for semi experienced (c++) programmers that are willing to work at no initial costs (around 2 or less years of experience). If you really want to get some money for what you do maybe we can arrange something -if- you can prove you're good enough and prove to be a great help for the project, for the rest your work will be rewarded accordingly -if- we get this game published in percentual royalties. A big pro would be if you are familiar with 3d (OpenGL) programming, most of the current programmers (2) are still in baby stage of 3d programming. I'd like to show you a site but we're just starting up on the developing process (the designing and planning is almost over), for now, if you're interested, please email squirrel@nidhogg.com or join us on IRC, channel #dark-vortex on irc.whahay.net

What is the difference between a dedicated and a non-dedicated server?

reply to this message

#3669: ..

by makkE on 11/24/2004 01:38

A dedicated server serves only, a non-dedicated server allows to play on it while hosting ("listen server")(only one task)..
It´s always better to run a dedicated server, because you can go on and off yourself, without shutting it down.. (others can play on)...

Dedicated servers are not shared with other users.

So for a dedicated server, I can run server.bat and then play on it with cube.bat?

reply to this message

#3672: ..

by Joey on 11/24/2004 02:26

If you want a dedicated server you have to hire or buy and relocate one, then upload the source code, compile it, and run cube_server.

Joey, nope. hahah, "compile it"
elky10: yes just like that.

It doesn't work with the official clients/servers...

But if you compile your server, you can connect to it with clients that you also compiled from source, if you want to play your own 'mod' on some LAN-party :)

Thanks for all your help, I've now got a server running (not permanent) at ip68-111-121-119.pn.at.cox.net. I'm in Florida, if that matters.

#3678: double free error

by theGerbil on 11/25/2004 00:20

Have just installed Cube from Linux Format DVD. Checked the SDL files ok .. ran using ./cube_unix and I receive the following error message.

glibc detected *** double free or corruption 0x08190c08 *** aborted

also the screen display blows right up and the mouse stops working. The only way out is to POPO.

Any guidance gratefully received.

I bet you are using Fedora Core 3 (FC3), because this exactly is the same problem I have on my laptop since I upgraded from FC2.

You are quite correct cducer I'm using FC3. I take it there are known issues already waiting to be resolved?

#3681: cube by softwarerendering

by matt on 11/25/2004 21:43

Give it a way to play Cube by Softwarerendering and not OpenGl ?

reply to this message

#3682: well, there's mesaGL

by Pxtl on 11/25/2004 21:46

But unless you've got a quantum computer in there, even mesaGL can't emulate OGL with any respectable speed.
