New April (?) cube release...

by Aardappel on 04/12/2004 00:58, 313 messages, last message: 07/28/2006 06:40, 321787 views, last view: 05/19/2024 00:52

As you all know, a new cube release is coming up. This will mostly be a content release (many new sp/dm maps, textures, models), but also functions as a wakeup call for all server operators and the "double ogro" problem, and last but not least will also have some new features.

Since most depends on the new content and I know many of you are working on it, I want to set a rough deadline so I can start wrapping things up and stop delaying the release any further. I would hope that to be in a week, but if that is too soon lets do 2 weeks. Let me know where you all stand.

Any further discussion about the new release goes in this thread too.

Actually, I was able to unzip it using the latest Winzip.

t will decompress the .gz and then open the .tar, from there you can unzip like usual.

One note, the file vaterland.cgz is set to read-only, and for some reason Winzip wouldn't overwrite it (even though I had it set to). I had to manually change that file to not-read-only then unzip.

I didn't over write it, I hope that file didn't change.

One flaw in the package: it doesn't create a savegames folder. Create one in the cube folder if you want to save a game. (I don't overwrite my old install.)

I used QuickZip ( http://www.quickzip.org/ ) which is free and also has the interesting capability to unpack Quake formats such as .pak, .pk3 . Interface is a little overachieving but it works.

#232: Tweaks to spentron maps

by spentron-postcrash2 on 05/23/2004 20:43

Saw the version of Castle Rampage is the one I modified, didn't expect that, cool. One thing is it can be impossible to kill all the monsters. You can just remember that or I figured out the problem. There was a problem with getting all the monsters to wake and I made some access points so I could get back there and figure out what was wrong. I left one of those in and some monsters, awake, are getting lost. This can be fixed by starting, press edit and F5, turn left 70 degrees, move forward a bit and rise until you see a big dark rectangular structure. The space within that going up the right side (with only small monsters in it) and around the far short end has a light, just beyond that is a 4-wide doorway leading to some Ratamahatta and Baaul. Seal that doorway.

Since Rampage is a Fanatic map, I recommend some Fanatic music, fanatic/07_fanatic-cubed-to-death.ogg is seems to fit.

mm5remix is a version of mm5 which I wanted different enough to be worth a play even if you played the original. Unfortunately the version I sent Aard used the now-old soundtrack (cubez0r/01/07/cubez0r/03 if curious). To install my picks from the current soundtrack, which makes for a most exciting and dramatic play IMO, open mm5remix.cfg and replace the set of 4 empty alias level_trigger commands with following text:

music songs/cubez0r.xm
alias level_trigger_36 "music fanatic/10_fanatic-my-destiny.ogg"
alias level_trigger_37 "music fanatic/02_fanatic-conquerer.ogg"
alias level_trigger_38 "music fanatic/09_fanatic-disrupting-force.ogg"
alias level_trigger_39 "music fanatic/08_fanatic-waiting-to-strike.ogg"

Oh and the rampage problem relates to random monster behaviour so tends to be random in occurrence. To complete those instructions: then savemap rampage, press F5 again!!!! (see wqd/fps), restart.

#235: TGZ file works on for me on Win2K

by scaR on 05/24/2004 05:24

I could have sworn I was the first to d/l the new Cube yesterday since I saw 0 dls before I started. Unfortunately it was still at 0 dls after I finished. :( Damn Sourceforge! Then I saw two servers running the new Cube so I realised I was definitely not first.

If anyone is still looking for a good FREE zip/unzip software try Iceows (Windows Only). It supports all formats (TGZ included) even those Quake 3 ones, and is a small 750K depending on language version. It uses the Windows GUI so you never really notice it, very slick. You just double click the file and it opens like a regular folder, commands in the right click or you can just drag & drop.

I have the occasional relative who happens to be an n00b use my PC and it has proven to be very 'idiot proof'.

He's not Andrew Gardner (Andrew Gardner is the developer of a freeware 3D SP FPS game & engine, he posted once on Cube forum and appears a polite and reasonable guy...)

In fact it's someone who crossposted both on Cube Forum and on the other's game forum saying each the other game is much better while this one sucks, trying to make a flame war between the two games communities.

You can check his numerous previous nicks here:

#243: The dumbest part is..

by Pxtl on 05/26/2004 16:45

at least the previous troll made sense - I mean, newgrounds and Cube have completely different audiences. Cube is a standalone game, newgrounds is just a posting-land for flash movies and shock games. Most of them are pretty tasteless imho, but ymmv.

#244: The cubecommunity

by jcdpc@school on 05/26/2004 19:04

HEY! we're on slashdot! The cube community is growing rapidly, so we'll probably get lots of good mappers and players, but we'll also have to deal with stupid lamers like the dumbass who posted as Andrew Gardner. I also suspect we'll get more cheaters and jerks playing multiplayer. just some thoughts our on growing community.
